Professional Practice

The Professional Practice Concentration strives to address the growing need for students, like you, to gain practical knowledge solving real-world problems while pursuing an advanced degree. That is why it gives you the opportunity to leverage industry co-op experience and simultaneously work on an Engineering Management practicum project for an employer and/or co-op provider.

Your internship/co-op fosters independent learning as you are expected to complete a real-world problem in an industrial environment and write and defend a technical report describing the experience. This experience, along with the academic coursework, makes you highly valuable professionally.

Through courses led by top faculty members at the Colleges of Engineering, Management and Textiles, you will cover topics in python programming, simulation modeling and Lean Six Sigma while focusing on the foundations from a technical engineering perspective. This concentration is also fully customizable, allowing you to pick and choose engineering and management courses for your own desired specialization.

The Master of Engineering Management with a professional practice concentration helps you gain knowledge and skills to:

  • Use rapid application development tools to design and implement database-based applications
  • Apply the basics of Numpy, Pandas and SciPy to perform numerical and scientific computing within Python
  • Understand production and inventory control to manage material flow through a manufacturing plant
  • Design and use simulation models with SIMIO software, to analyze different facilities
  • Learn the concepts and methods of quality engineering
  • Manage complex technical products during all phases of their product life cycle
  • Use a systematic approach (Lean Six Sigma philosophy) for improving products and processes
