Bio

Lee Smith is a Lecturer in the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Program at NC State University. He is a problem solver with a strong background in software development, mathematical modeling, forecasting and mathematical optimization. He is particularly interested in challenges that lie at the intersection of theory and real-world implementation. His teaching and professional work emphasize practical, data-driven decision making supported by rigorous analytical foundations.

In addition to his academic role, Smith has extensive industry experience in data science, risk modeling and data engineering within the financial services sector. His technical skill set includes Python, SQL, time series analysis, mathematical optimization, machine learning, cloud-native tools and modern software engineering practices such as test-driven development and containerized workflows.

Before beginning his graduate studies, Smith spent more than a decade as a professional DJ, serving as the in-game DJ for both the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. During this time, he provided music for major sporting events, including the MLB All-Star Game and multiple World Series games at Comerica Park—an experience that continues to inform his engaging teaching style and passion for clear communication.

Smith enjoys collaborating with motivated individuals and building effective teams, whether in academic, industry or classroom settings. He welcomes conversations about interesting problems, research ideas and applied analytics, and encourages students and colleagues alike to connect and share their work.
