Facilities Engineering

Last Updated: 02/09/2024 and all information is still up-to-date

Facilities engineering combines multidisciplinary engineering and management. It requires knowledge of all aspects of the physical facility, including the planning cycle, the buildings, infrastructure and people.

This discipline requires you to have an understanding of the “big picture” components of:

  • Facilities planning
  • Budget prioritization
  • Overall engineering and operations

It also requires you to understand specific facility issues, such as:

  • HVAC dependability
  • Power quality and reliability
  • Pavement integrity (such as airfield pavements)
  • Environmental compliance
  • Network-controlled energy efficiency systems
  • Cyber-security

Through courses led by top faculty members at the Colleges of Engineering, Textiles and Management, you will cover topics in environmental compliance, modeling and analysis and smart electric power systems while focusing on the foundations of facilities management from a technical engineering perspective.

NOTE: Our concentration in Facilities Engineering meets the degree requirements and certification from branches of the US military for MEM degrees.

Technical Electives

These courses will increase your knowledge in a classical engineering discipline. This can be in any technical area, such as structural engineering, pavement design, environmental engineering, soil analysis or design, hydraulics, hydrology, mechanical or electrical engineering.

You will choose one technical elective from the following list. In general, any master’s or 500-level engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, industrial, etc) course may count as a technical elective. It is your responsibility to ensure it meets the course prerequisites. Ph.D. or 700-level courses may count as exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
